Mobile Game Art Test: Avatar Structures and Plants

Before joining Jam City's LA studio to work on their new invest/express mobile title, I completed this 2D art test. The (unfortunately canceled) game licensed a major sci-fi IP, and in executing this art test I took care to channel the unique look of that IP's alien plantlife and handmade architecture while hitting a stylized visual target.

While the final assets I created while working at the studio utilized models created by a 3D artist, I painted these test assets entirely in Photoshop from start to finish.

This structure utilizes the armored shell, hide, and bones of a massive alien creature.

This alien plant might entice small flying creatures to poke around inside its "mouth" for nectar before devouring them!

This process page shows how I translated movie still reference into my initial structure concepts. For my alien plant, I referenced real-world flora as well as undersea creatures, coral, and images of microscopic organisms.
